{"id":3021,"date":"2025-10-09T22:49:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T02:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/2025\/10\/trump-administration-doubles-down-on-safety-of-cancer-linked-atrazine\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T22:49:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T02:49:19","slug":"trump-administration-doubles-down-on-safety-of-cancer-linked-atrazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=3021","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Doubles Down on Safety of Cancer-Linked Atrazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Trump U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/endangered-species\/biological-opinions-available-public-comment-links-final-opinions-and-links\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that the widely used pesticide atrazine does not pose an extinction risk to a single protected animal or plant, despite widespread contamination of the nation\u2019s rivers, lakes and streams.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s announcement echoes recent events: Tough rhetoric on the dangers of atrazine in the initial Make America Healthy Again Commission\u2019s report was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2025\/10\/05\/maha-report-agriculture-lobby\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">replaced<\/a> with industry talking points in the follow-up report following outcry and heavy lobbying by corporate agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s initial assessment of atrazine in 2020 found that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/epa-widely-used-pesticide-atrazine-likely-harms-more-1000-endangered-species-2020-11-05\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">likely to harm<\/a> more than 1,000 imperiled species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis announcement is an absolute joke,\u201d said Nathan Donley, environmental health science director at the Center for Biological Diversity. \u201cYou\u2019d have an easier time convincing me that the government isn\u2019t really shut down than persuading me that atrazine isn\u2019t putting a single endangered species at risk of extinction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fish and Wildlife Service\u2019s draft assessment mainly finds that mitigations already proposed by the EPA are sufficient to prevent atrazine-induced extinction of endangered species.<\/p>\n<p>Yet a Center <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/trump-urged-to-ban-cancer-linked-atrazine-kill-biden-era-plan-2025-01-30\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a> submitted to the Trump administration found that the EPA\u2019s plan would still allow harmful levels of atrazine in more than 11,000 U.S. watersheds, which encompass about one-eighth of the entire landmass of the continental United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite rhetoric to the contrary, there is no better friend of atrazine than the Trump administration,\u201d said Donley. \u201cHiding behind the rhetoric of MAHA, a poison that\u2019s likely to keep Americans sick for generations is moving forward full steam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the first Trump administration, the EPA <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/epa-scraps-protections-children-pesticide-linked-birth-defects-cancer-2020-09-18\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">discarded<\/a> safety protections that were in place to protect young children from atrazine.<\/p>\n<p>Atrazine, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-international.org\/pan-international-consolidated-list-of-banned-pesticides\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">banned<\/a> in 60 countries, is the second most <a href=\"https:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/nawqa\/pnsp\/usage\/maps\/show_map.php?year=2019&amp;map=ATRAZINE&amp;hilo=L&amp;disp=Atrazine\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">widely used<\/a> pesticide in the United States and one of the nation\u2019s most controversial and widespread pesticide water contaminants. It is a known hormone-disrupting pesticide linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2818361\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">birth defects<\/a>, multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10880817\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cancers<\/a>, and fertility problems like <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/epdf\/10.1289\/ehp.6417\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">low sperm quality<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22000761\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">irregular menstrual cycles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA is reassessing the safety of atrazine because that is required every 15 years for each EPA-approved pesticide.<\/p>\n<p>The Fish and Wildlife Service\u2019s draft assessment stems from a <a href=\"https:\/\/biologicaldiversity.org\/w\/news\/press-releases\/court-orders-trump-fish-and-wildlife-service-to-protect-endangered-species-from-atrazine-chlorpyrifos-three-other-toxic-pesticides-2025-03-13\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">legal agreement<\/a> with the Center.
