In the weeks since kidnapping Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, President Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/01\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-safeguards-venezuelan-oil-revenue-for-the-good-of-the-american-and-venezuelan-people\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">seized control of the country\u2019s oil<\/a> and directed more than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/venezuelan-banks-will-get-300-million-oil-money-sell-exchange-market-sources-say-2026-01-16\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> $300 million of the funds from the sale to a bank account in Qatar<\/a>. In response, <strong>Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen<\/strong>, issued the following statement: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ongoing military actions in the Caribbean and South America, including the abduction of Venezuela\u2019s president, are wrong, illegal under U.S. and international law and unconstitutional. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongressional Republicans have blocked War Powers Resolutions that would end the U.S. aggression in Venezuela, an extremely dangerous abdication of Congressional responsibility to check presidential unlawfulness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarco Rubio\u2019s central role in the planning and execution of the scheme to violate the sovereignty of Venezuela and steal the country\u2019s oil merits a deep investigation by Congress, and potentially the removal of Rubio as Secretary of State.
