{"id":3325,"date":"2026-04-22T21:00:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=3325"},"modified":"2026-04-22T21:00:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:00:18","slug":"data-center-growth-threatens-air-quality-and-progress-toward-cleaner-energy-grid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=3325","title":{"rendered":"Data center growth threatens air quality and progress toward cleaner energy grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=5b3bd69050&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rapid growth<\/a> of renewable energy usage in recent years, the even-more-explosive growth of data centers is delaying the transition to a cleaner grid in ways that could harm the air we breathe. That\u2019s according to new research released for Earth Day on Wednesday by Frontier Group, Environment America Research &amp; Policy Center and U.S. PIRG Education Fund. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cIt\u2019s great that renewable energy is growing rapidly, but we also need to be transitioning away from dirty energy sources. We can&#8217;t afford to lose ground on that front,\u201d <strong>said <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=e6bcb72d7e&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Johanna Neumann<\/a>, senior director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research &amp; Policy Center.<\/strong> \u201cPollution from fossil fuels harms our kids\u2019 lungs and dangerously heats up our planet. We need to get our priorities straight. A healthy, safe environment is essential for a good quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The research, building on <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=7995251b39&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">new government data<\/a>, tracks a dramatic slowdown in the previously accelerating pace of coal plant retirements as utilities respond to rising electricity demand from data centers and other sources. Compared to 2022, when the country was retiring power plants at a pace that would lead to a coal-free grid by 2040, the current pace of plant retirements would keep some of our dirtiest ones online until 2065. Power generation from coal-fired power plants increased by <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=7312ab9978&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">13%<\/a> in 2025 as U.S. electricity generation hit an <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=a47e18b025&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">all-time record<\/a>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the research papers, <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=ca13ea00a0&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Energy Transition at Risk<\/em><\/a>, uses data from the Energy Information Administration to document both the dramatic slowdown in retiring America\u2019s dirtiest power plants and the resurgence of new proposals for gas-powered plants.<\/li>\n<li>The other research paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=d2dab2c7cd&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Fossil fuel plants are staying online longer. That means dirtier air<\/em><\/a>, uses U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data to quantify the amount of air pollution \u2013 sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury \u2013 produced by many of the fossil fuel power plants whose lifetimes are being extended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> The authors recommend that to reduce the environmental and public health harms of increased electricity demand from data centers and other sources, policy makers should increase energy efficiency, ease barriers to clean energy, and continue to phase out dirty power plants. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe\u2019ll all suffer if we rush to build new, polluting gas plants for uncertain data center demand,\u201d <strong>said U.S. PIRG Education Fund Energy and Utilities Program Director <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=e597ddb03f&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Abe Scarr<\/a>.<\/strong> \u201cInstead, policy makers should prioritize no-regrets strategies like energy efficiency and renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The new analysis follows Frontier Group\u2019s analysis of delayed fossil fuel power plant retirements in its January 2025 report, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=deaa6f8952&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Big Data Centers, Big Problems<\/a>\u201d and an update of that data in <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=1627eb9d47&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">October 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;It&#8217;s absurd to power the technology of tomorrow with the dirty and dangerous energy sources of yesterday,&#8221; <strong>said <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=139d65dce9&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Quentin Good<\/a>, policy analyst with Frontier Group.<\/strong> &#8220;Harming the environment and jeopardizing people&#8217;s health is no way to build a better future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> The groups have also <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ce23fee8c5f1232fe0701c44e&amp;id=06d322fadf&amp;e=2f3b75b1fa\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">organized a petition<\/a> as part of broader efforts advocating for data centers to run on 100% renewable energy, follow efficiency standards and operate in ways that reduce load stress on the grid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"horizontal-rule\"><\/div>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>Environment America Research &amp; Policy Center, a 501(c)(3) organization, conducts research, policy analysis and public education.
