We already know that global heating is supercharging extreme weather damage, and the public wants polluters to pay for it. With Big Oil\u2019s earnings skyrocketing while a global food crisis looms, now is the time to act. The only way to stave off a humanitarian disaster is to make those causing it pay upfront \u2014 before even more damage is done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most of the Caribbean is currently suffering a moderate to severe drought triggered by El Ni\u00f1o, with conditions expected to get worse in the next few months lasting until early 2027. <strong><br \/> <\/strong><strong><br \/> <\/strong><strong>Amira Odeh Qui\u00f1ones, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>350.org<\/strong><\/a><strong> Caribbean Organizer said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHere in Puerto Rico, some households only have water three days a week. Historic amounts of sargassum seaweed due to record ocean temperatures are reducing fishermen\u2019s catches. We\u2019re already experiencing dramatic losses in agriculture due to drought and extreme heat. Local farmers are harvesting less, and the price of imported food is rising. Even if we contributed the least to the climate crisis, we are suffering from its harshest effects.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Indonesia, nearly 93% of the country had recorded low rainfall by mid-July and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.antaranews.com\/news\/425997\/govt-tackles-drought-in-492-areas-amid-el-nino-impact\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">droughts<\/a> have been recorded in almost 500 locations amid El Ni\u00f1o. An increase in forest fires has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/indonesia-shows-elevated-fire-hotspot-activity-in-2026-as-super-el-nino-threat-looms\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">observed<\/a>, even though Indonesia has yet to enter its wildfire season. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Sisilia Nurmala Dewi, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>350.org<\/strong><\/a><strong> Indonesia Manager said: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWater scarcity is resulting in crop failures, and food price increases will soon follow. El Ni\u00f1o has been forecast since March \u2014 the government must be able to deliver a reliable, well-governed early warning system to farmers and at-risk communities before impacts hit. We urge the Prabowo government to impose a permanent windfall tax on fossil fuel companies to help raise funds for affected communities. Our leaders can\u2019t just watch people go hungry while fossil fuel companies gorge on profits.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the United Kingdom, farmers are experiencing their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/aug\/02\/britain-food-shortages-drought-continues-farmers\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">worst harvests<\/a> in years as a result of a heatwave gripping many parts of Europe. Farmers have warned that the country may be facing shortages in certain foods due to drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ellie May, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>350.org<\/strong><\/a><strong> UK campaigner said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBritain is baking, and farmers are paying the price. This punishing heatwave isn\u2019t a one-off \u2014 it\u2019s constantly rising food bills and food shortages we\u2019ll face again and again unless we act. The oil and gas giants driving this crisis are raking in record profits. It\u2019s time the UK government made polluters pay their fair share, so farmers and communities can weather what\u2019s coming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In East Africa, Uganda\u2019s worst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2026\/jul\/27\/uganda-begins-emergency-food-handouts-after-19-die-from-hunger\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">drought<\/a> in decades has already caused 19 deaths and a food crisis, while meteorologists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/14\/record-el-nino-threatens-to-unleash-floods-across-east-africa-and-asia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">warn<\/a> that El Ni\u00f1o will trigger severe flooding in the region in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruth Agala, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>350.org<\/strong><\/a><strong> East Africa Organizer said: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFarms are drying up, families are going hungry. Women and girls carry a <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/plan-international.org\/kenya\/news\/2026\/03\/18\/when-the-rains-stop-in-kenyas-north\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>double burden<\/em><\/a><em> as they trek for long distances in search of food, water and firewood. While oil and gas giants rake in massive second-quarter profits and push forward with planet-heating projects like the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline, ordinary Africans are left to pay the price. African governments must hold fossil fuel companies accountable with a windfall profits tax that can be used to finance a community-centered, just energy transition.
