{"id":3614,"date":"2026-08-19T23:23:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T03:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2026-08-19T23:23:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T03:23:19","slug":"trump-continues-quid-pro-quo-shakedown-to-force-constitution-of-gas-pipeline-public-citizen-argues-in-filing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=3614","title":{"rendered":"Trump Continues Quid Pro Quo Shakedown to Force Constitution of Gas Pipeline, Public Citizen Argues in Filing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>In an update to its formal filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/article\/challenge-trump-quid-pro-quo-shakedown-constitution-gas-pipeline\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Public Citizen today blasted<\/a> the Trump administration\u2019s arbitrary, capricious and exploitative campaign to build the Constitution Pipeline, calling the project contrary to the public interest. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/article\/challenge-trump-quid-pro-quo-shakedown-constitution-gas-pipeline\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The filing<\/a> comes days after the Trump administration enforced the annulment of a fourth New York offshore wind project, which included a payment of $1.2 billion of taxpayer money to the company to terminate the project. <\/p>\n<p>RWE U.S. Offshore, the company that had previously been set to develop the New York Bight offshore wind project, agreed to end the project because the company stated that it \u201cdetermined there is no path forward to permit these projects in the U.S. for the foreseeable future,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwe.com\/en\/press\/rwe-americas\/2026-08-06-rwe-us-offshore-reaches-settlement-with-doi-on-offshore-wind-leases\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to a release from the company<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased upon President Donald J. Trump\u2019s unambiguous statements, his administration is forcing an end to New York offshore wind energy projects in an effort to coerce the state\u2019s Governor to support the Constitution pipeline,\u201d <strong>said Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen\u2019s Energy Program.<\/strong> \u201cTrump\u2019s coercive quid pro quo campaign is an arbitrary, capricious and exploitative attempt to strongarm unnecessary fossil fuel infrastructure by using taxpayers money to pay off the wind industry. Trump\u2019s entire endeavor to build this pipeline is a massive and unnecessary waste of money.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The filing today is an update to FERC, expounding on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/federal-regulators-must-halt-review-of-constitution-natural-gas-pipeline-after-president-trumps-explicit-threats-to-cancel-more-offshore-wind-projects-in-retaliation-against-new-york\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Public Citizen\u2019s initial filing in June<\/a>, challenging a petition by Oklahoma-based Williams Companies for a certificate of public convenience and necessity to construct and operate Constitution Pipeline. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democrats.senate.gov\/newsroom\/trump-transcripts\/transcript-president-trump-speaks-to-reporters-before-air-force-one-departure-6926\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">On June 9<\/a>, on a trip to New York to attend the NBA finals, Trump said that because New York\u2019s governor \u201cbroke\u201d a deal to support the Constitution gas pipeline, he would move forward with canceling the wind projects, saying: \u201cso I guess we\u2019re withdrawing those windmills.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has now stopped two New York offshore wind projects since that threat.
