{"id":387,"date":"2024-03-20T05:48:26","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T05:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=387"},"modified":"2024-03-20T05:48:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T05:48:26","slug":"africas-top-exchange-to-trade-carbon-offsets-within-two-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vr-news.net\/?p=387","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s Top Exchange to Trade Carbon Offsets Within Two Months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<h2 class=\"visually-hidden\">Article content<\/h2>\n<p>(Bloomberg) \u2014 JSE Ltd., which operates Africa\u2019s biggest stock and bond exchanges, will start trading carbon offsets within two months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Johannesburg-based company in October formed a partnership with Xpansiv Ltd., which provides infrastructure to trade what it calls environmental commodities such as carbon credits and renewable energy certificates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had at least five sellers wanting to register,\u201d JSE\u2019s Chief Executive Officer Leila Fourie said in an interview on Monday. \u201cWe expect that the first credits to be issued will be around April and May.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While South Africa is not the continent\u2019s biggest producer of carbon credits, it is the region\u2019s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. With the country gradually increasing a carbon tax, the market for offsets is set to surge. The nation is also Africa\u2019s biggest producer of solar and wind power.<\/p>\n<p>The credits to be initially traded are tied to forestry and farming projects that absorb carbon from the atmosphere, Fourie said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A single carbon credit is equivalent to a ton of climate warming carbon dioxide or its equivalent either removed from the atmosphere or prevented from entering it in the first place.
